FAQ
What is HopOn?
HopOn is a games-based cycling program that teaches school-aged kids across Canada the joys of cycling safely. HopOn expands the hugely successful iRide program developed in BC across the nation.
Where can I take the HopOn program?
HopOn will be offered in 8 provinces in 2022 (either in the Spring or Fall, dependent on current restrictions in each province) and will expand to other provinces in the future.
Who can participate?
HopOn will have 3-day in school programs for grades 3 to 6 and Community programs for kids aged 6-16 that will run 2-6 weeks in length.
When will the program start?
Most provinces will begin in the Spring of 2022.
How much does the program cost?
The cost of the program is determined by your Provincial/Territorial Cycling Association.
What if my child can't ride a bike?
Each HopOn program is designed to cater to different skill abilities. For example, our in-school program is primarily designed for students who can already ride. Students still learning will work with their teacher, with support from our instructors, to fast track their skills and confidence and join the rest of their class when they are ready.

What does my child need for a course?
- Bring your own two-wheel bike – make sure that it’s in good working order (chain doesn’t get stuck, gear and brakes work, etc.).
- Bring your own approved cycling helmet – all participants need to wear a helmet at all times during the program. These helmets must be cycling helmets and cannot be ones designed for other sports such as skiing and skateboarding. Instructors can help with sizing but helmets should be made for kids and not just borrowed from an adult.
- Dress appropriately – make sure that participants are showing up to sessions with clothes that are suitable for the weather and that will allow them to move freely. Closed toe shoes are a must. Please don’t wear clip-in shoes to sessions.
Some provinces/territories may provide bikes and helmets to participants if they do not have one.
How can I become a HopOn Instructor?
HopOn Instructors are trained largely using the National Coach Certification Program and follow Cycling Canada’s Community Coach pathway. Those interested in becoming Instructors should contact the Cycling Canada national office for additional details specific to their region. Click here for more information.
