Levels

The HopOn program uses a colour-coded levels system to help identify the skill levels of different riders. Programming will be adapted on an individual basis so that all participants can be challenged and learn.

These levels also help parents know what types of programs they should be looking at for their kids.

Level 1

Colour: Yellow

Difficulty: Novice

Rider Type: New to Pedaling

I can… 

  • Ride a two-wheel bike 60 pedal strokes without stopping

Programs are designed for beginners and happen in school and community settings. A typical age range for this level is 3-8.

Level 2

Colour: Green

Difficulty: Beginner

Rider Type: Comfortable on Grass Fields

I can…

  • Stop & start quickly
  • Change gears
  • Tap head with hand while riding

Programs are designed for beginners and happen in school and community settings. A typical age range for this level is 4-9.

Level 3

Colour: Blue

Difficulty: Intermediate

Rider Type: Introduction to forest trails

I can… 

  • Turn quickly
  • Look behind while riding straight
  • Roll off a sidewalk curb

Programs are designed for all types of riders provided that they are comfortable. Courses happen in schools and in communities. A typical age range for this level is 5-10.

Level 4

Colour: Black

Difficulty: Advanced

Rider Type: Ready for New Challenges

  • Lift front wheel
  • Tap foot while riding
  • Put hand on partner’s shoulder

Programs are designed for advanced riders and happen in community settings. A typical age range for this level is 8-12.

Level 5

Colour: Red

Difficulty: Club

Rider Type: Seeking a Riding Group

  • Stopn’ go with one hand on head
  • Stop’n go on steep hill
  • Ride beside/behind a partner

Programs are designed for advanced riders and happen in community settings. A typical age range for this level is 9-15.
